Our advocacy is working! Metro did 19k fare checks in May. It's tiny, but it's a start. Let's tell them to keep ramping up enforcement.
On May 11th, 2026, LA Metro's San Gabriel Valley Service Advisory Council voted to urge the Board to "take immediate action to reinstate regular onboard fare inspections." This vote was unanimous among members in attendance. The letter below has been filed as a comment on agenda item 39 (Monthly Update on Public Safety) on the May 2026 Operations, Safety and Customer Experience meeting.
We are enormously grateful to the SGV service council for speaking up for fare enforcement, even after receiving a presentation from DPS denying LA Metro's fare enforcement collapse. Because no matter how Metro DPS wants to spin it, regular Metro riders can directly observe that fare checks aren't happening and haven't for a long time. Riders can see that fare evasion is so commonplace, most riders no longer even view it as a transgression. And riders can see the deterioration of onboard conditions that has resulted in worsened safety for the hundreds of thousands of working class commuters who rely on LA Metro.
Hopefully, thanks to advocacy like the letter below, LA Metro's leadership will start seeing what we see onboard every day, and step up to fix it.
